What’s Happening @OAK: August 2013

There is a lot happening at OAK nowadays – not that we ever have much down time! It just seems like lately there is so much on the go. Summer so far has been jam packed with community events and campaigns, new projects, completed projects and luckily a little bit of sun.

As you may have heard, Manu received his Forty Under 40 award from the Ottawa Business Journal. The gala was so much fun and filled with incredibly passionate entrepreneurs. It was a fantastic way to celebrate the recipients’ business success, leadership, and dedication to the community.

There has been lots of community campaigning happening in our office for big causes (community is a word that comes up a lot at OAK, if you haven’t noticed already!). Over the past couple of months we have been focusing a lot on Kiva, a nonprofit organization aiming to alleviate poverty through micro-financing. They are doing major good for this world and make it easy for you and I to give small loans that change lives (learn more about OAK & Kiva here). Read the rest of this entry »

3D Printer Young Makers
Our 3D printer Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign has come to a close and wow, was it ever a huge success! Thanks again to all of our incredible contributors and everyone who has shown their support throughout the campaign. Not only did we hit our goal 11 days early, but within the remaining days we went above and beyond our original goal, how awesome is that?! A little over two months ago this was just an idea. Manu Sharma, Obaid Ahmed and Luc Lalande realized the possibility of what an innovative technology like a 3D printer could bring to youth in Ottawa, especially disadvantaged and inner-city youth. Young Maker: 3D Printer Community Pop-up Campaign

3D Printer Community Pop-up

It’s a very exciting day here at OAK. Over the past month and a half Manu Sharma, Luc Lalande and Obaid Ahmed have been crowdfunding to host a 3D printer pop-up at OAK. This printer will be used exclusively for community benefit, and will be available for onsite demos to community organizations. The aim was to raise $5400 in 45 days, and 11 days early we successfully reached our goal. The support we have received for this initiative was absolutely incredible. Specifically, the support from the Ottawa community has been outstanding, not that we expected any less! On behalf of OAK, I would like to personally thank everyone who donated and/or spread the word of the campaign. The power of word to mouth is very well known, and we witnessed it ourselves throughout this campaign. Read the rest of this entry »

How to Use Adobe After Effects to Animate a Sketch from Illustrator

Video is evolving nearly as fast as technology, and along with it particular styles of animation are emerging. Nowadays, hand drawn animation (or most commonly known as white board animation) is significantly growing in popularity. You can use this style to tell a story or explain a concept simplistically through a animated sketch on a blank canvas. Moreover, it can also be used to add visual appeal to long narrative speeches or live footage to capture your viewers interest.

In After Effects, the stoke effect tool will help you animate your sketch, making it look like it’s being drawn out before your eyes. If you are interested in this style of animation, it will be your new best friend! So whether you are curious about how it’s done, or you have spent hours drawing the perfect sketch in Adobe Illustrator only to redraw it in After Effects to animate it, this tutorial is for you.
