OAK has an office – Stop by if you are in Byward Market

We have mentioned this in some of our latest tweets, but this is big enough news for us to be worth a dedicated post. We have taken a break from working virtually and moved into an office. Yes, OAK has an office now ….. and we are located at:

44 Byward Market

Suite 220

Ottawa, ON – K1N 1K1

It’s pretty crazy, we only thought of doing it about 5 weeks ago, and now we’re starting our 3rd week here. It’s a great space, right in the ByWard market, next to SWIX … a company we have come to admire and appreciate over the years. Very exciting indeed.

The space was previously with one of Ottawa’s top consulting firms before, and we were lucky to get really good terms on it. We snapped it up after one visit and a few hours of reflection. Needless to say, all of us fell in love with it the moment we saw it. We both have great bright views of Byward Market (our French windows face the flower and garden kiosks) and awesome access to more than 20 of the best bars and coffee shops in Ottawa. We have over 800 sq feet of space, enough space to easily have 8-10 desks with space to spare. It already feels much more positive than sitting on our own ends communicating virtually.

Co-working was a definite need for us. We have grown fast in the last one year and grown to a point where we needed the added productivity – both in ideation and development – that comes with co-location to keep pace with our growth. We have been together in this new space for 2 weeks, and already we feel that it allows us to act/respond to emerging needs much faster. The only downside (if we can think of one of the top of our minds) is the commute and/or the parking, but the positives more than compensate for this challenge. We are still working on the name for our office … but we already have a clear favorite. More details on that in the next post that we will dedicate to how we are setting up the office …

In the meantime, drop in if you are in the market. We always have water, juice and beer stocked and we are always looking to enjoy a beer with anyone who comes to visit while enjoying the view from our French windows … This feels like a great step forward for us, and we are sure it’s going to lead us to being a more effective team.

OneTouchRecycle – OAK submission to Apps4Ottawa

There is a need in Ottawa for a mobile app that makes recycling locally super simple, giving you specific details of where you can recycle and exactly what you can recycle. For a G7 capital, Ottawa’s recycling footprint – and to a huge extent our recycling awareness – is frankly quite appalling. To think of it, you can still not easily find recycling in commercial “ready to go premium beverage” shops and other recycling heavy businesses should/has to change. It is our opinion that a mobile application in this domain will offer environmentally conscious citizens greater choice and empower them to drive change/innovation in this domain and it will help convert those who are still on the edge of jumping on to the “Eco-Friendly Recycling Conscious” bandwagon. 9 Steps to a Better WordPress Installation

As WordPress continues to gain popularity, tools and methods to enhance its usability and flexibility will increase as well. So too, however, will attacks on WordPress-based blogs and websites.

With both of these developments in mind, a secure website is imperative, but not at the expense of usability. This article will show you nine steps to achieving both of these goals.

Five steps to a more complete and usable WordPress installation

Let’s start with the less complex steps. These five steps are part of the setup of your WordPress blog, but are often skipped, especially by those who have installed multiple instances of WordPress. Read the rest of this entry »

Latest Enterprise Project: New OCRI website launched

OAK is proud to announce its most recent enterprise project, OCRI’s new WordPress based website. Please visit the website at: www.ocri.ca

This was a significant project for us, not just because OCRI is such a big name in Ottawa but also because OCRI’s web needs were distinctively unique. OCRI’s reason for migrating to WordPress was to leverage WordPress’s powerful CMS abilities to pull information from its many different web presences representing different OCRI initiatives while presenting it all in a clean, organized, and highly automated fashion.  Read the rest of this entry »

Death of Meta Tags – or Maybe Not

“Meta Tags – the golden word of Web 1.0 – are irrelevant now”

I heard someone at a local dev event making this comment today and it immediately got me thinking. True, I do not spend as much time as I used to – oh the good old days – worrying about meta tagging. But are meta tags really irrelevant? This introspection set into motion an evening of soul searching and web research, followed by this blog entry.

The truth of the matter is that “meta tags” are not nearly as important as they used to be, and that should be remembered when one is allocating his/her time towards this specific task. Not too long ago – during the time of the good old Web 1.0 – meta tags were a primary factor for search engines, and all of us gave those ”meta keywords tag” and “meta description tags” that little extra bit of attention. They are, however, no longer the primary factor for the modern search engine. And alas, the statement that got this introspection going is relatively true … Read the rest of this entry »

iPhone OS 4.0

Yesterday was a big day at Apple. They finally showed us what they have been working on for past year or so. iPhone, like it or hate it, is a hot platform. With the introduction of iPad, things are just going to get hotter. It will be interesting to see how developers tackle the latest SDK.

So what is in the latest SDK:

  • Multitasking
  • iAd
  • Game Center
  • New API
  • New Development Tools

We at OAK Computing are excited to get our hands on this latest SDK. Our clients have been asking us to start brainstorming the possibilities of using the new SDK.  Apple has opened up a few of the closed APIs that will allow us to really make the experience fun and unique.

Perhaps the most exciting feature is “Multitasking” and along with it the ability to do “offline notifications”. If your application needed to provide real time alerts to the user without the use of push notification the “offline notifications” should really make it easier. Your application can now keep running in the background and when needed be ready for consumption.

We at OAK Computing have already started working on some updates to our existing client applications with latest SDK. If you wish to see how we can help you deliver on iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, please get in touch with us.
