What’s Happening @OAK: August 2013

There is a lot happening at OAK nowadays – not that we ever have much down time! It just seems like lately there is so much on the go. Summer so far has been jam packed with community events and campaigns, new projects, completed projects and luckily a little bit of sun.

As you may have heard, Manu received his Forty Under 40 award from the Ottawa Business Journal. The gala was so much fun and filled with incredibly passionate entrepreneurs. It was a fantastic way to celebrate the recipients’ business success, leadership, and dedication to the community.

There has been lots of community campaigning happening in our office for big causes (community is a word that comes up a lot at OAK, if you haven’t noticed already!). Over the past couple of months we have been focusing a lot on Kiva, a nonprofit organization aiming to alleviate poverty through micro-financing. They are doing major good for this world and make it easy for you and I to give small loans that change lives (learn more about OAK & Kiva here). Read the rest of this entry »

Young Maker: 3D Printer Community Pop-up Campaign

3D Printer Community Pop-up

It’s a very exciting day here at OAK. Over the past month and a half Manu Sharma, Luc Lalande and Obaid Ahmed have been crowdfunding to host a 3D printer pop-up at OAK. This printer will be used exclusively for community benefit, and will be available for onsite demos to community organizations. The aim was to raise $5400 in 45 days, and 11 days early we successfully reached our goal. The support we have received for this initiative was absolutely incredible. Specifically, the support from the Ottawa community has been outstanding, not that we expected any less! On behalf of OAK, I would like to personally thank everyone who donated and/or spread the word of the campaign. The power of word to mouth is very well known, and we witnessed it ourselves throughout this campaign. Read the rest of this entry »

OAK Computing Fun Wisdom WordleI was thinking, what better way to start a blog post about spreading fun wisdom than with an awesome Wordle concept cloud! I am seriously hooked on this site- in 2 seconds it creates a beautiful word cloud from your text. It’s such a great tool to visually map out your thinking, papers, copy or anything! Anyways, this is starting to sounds like a Wordle plug and not a blog post. How about I just consider that my good tech karma for the day? Read the rest of this entry »
